DMV OFFERS ONLINE REGISTRATION OF OUT-OF STATE SNOWMOBILES

Non-Residents Can Obtain Temporary Registration and Immediately Begin Riding

In an effort to make it easier for snowmobile riders from other states to operate their sleds in New York, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has developed a new online transaction that will allow out-of-state snowmobilers to print temporary New York State registrations for snowmobiles that are currently registered in their home states. The temporary certificate, combined with their home state registration document, will allow snowmobilers from out-of state to begin riding immediately in New York.

“This is another example of what the Department is doing to improve customer service by working better, smarter and more efficiently,” said DMV Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala. “We hope that the convenience of this new online registration will encourage many non-residents to visit New York to enjoy our recreational areas and all the wonderful snowmobile trails that our state has to offer.”

NYSSA Partners with JIMAPCO PDF Print E-mail

NYSSA has partnered with JIMAPCO, makers of road maps and all sorts of other mapping software, to provide snowmobilers with an interactive snowmobile trail guide. This online guide was derived from the trail information that the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation collects, which is in the public domain. The guide includes all corridor and secondary trails funded through the NYS Snowmobile Trail Fund that has been GPSed to date.

To view the guide, go to http://jimapco.com/maproom/snowmobile/nys/

Users can zoom in on a particular area, find out the trail number designation, and see which club maintains the trail. Contact information for each club will be added shortly. Since trails may change frequently for many reasons, this guide is not intended for navigation, but for general information.

New York is pleased to join neighboring states in providing online, interactive trail information. Snowmobilers are still encouraged to contact the local clubs that maintain the trails for up-to-date paper maps. These paper maps provide the most accurate information, and are important fundraisers for the clubs.

Riders are reminded that $35 of a NYSSA club member's snowmobile registration fee, and $90 of a non-member's snowmobile registration fee, goes into the Snowmobile Trail Fund, most of which is then channeled back to New Yorks's all-volunteer clubs in support of snowmobile trail maintenance efforts year round. Some of the money is used to provide law enforcement for safer trails, safety education course materials for annual classes, and other related projects.

For more information about Jimapco, please visit their website, www.jimapco.com, or contact Mike LaViolette, 518-899-5091 x215.
