The Trail GPS program was initiated primarily to assist clubs in meeting the OPRHP objective of all GIS (Geographical Information System) based trails by April 2007. It is also an important objective to allow an accurate update of the NYS Snowmobile Corridor Trail Map. Clubs use of the GPS receiver and mapping software provide the digital trail information to support GIS.
At the NYSSA 2005 Forum, it was announced that NYSSA would provide support to member clubs for the Trail GPS/GIS program. This support includes a guide to GPS use and map data preparation, instructional classes, and an on-line GPS technical discussion forum.
This web page is the hub of GPS program information with access to documents, forms and support for this GPS project.

GPS Session at NYSSA 2007 Forum
- Jim
The GPS presentation at the NYSSA 2007 Forum will be an overview of the NYSSA GPS Program. It will be much like the GPS Introduction presented last year at the 2006 forum and will include few updates including newly available hardware and software. This year’s presentation is limited to one hour since there are more seminars taking place. Therefore it will be fast paced.
I will cover the basics and terminology definition as well as a quick look at the steps involved in gathering GPS data and preparing it for submission.
Hope to see you there!

Delorme Topo 6.0
- Jim
DeLorme Topo 6.0 is has now been released. It has quite a few changes...better for the most part.
A couple of things are significant. GPS tracks are downloaded into track layers where in TOPO 5.0 they were dowloaded to line draw file. That means if you need to add a bit of trail to fill a gap you need to use the Track draw tool not line draw. In the final steps it will be necessary to delete a lable from the exported text file.
A second feature is the ability to import *.gpx files.
Since Garmin MapSource can save track as *.gpx, you will now be able to pass tracks from MapSource to Delorme.
More detail will be coming. One bug I have found is that you cannot download tracks directly from the new Garmin 60CSx models. Since you can now pass data from Mapsource to Delorme Topo, this is not a big problem.

Garmin GPSMap 60CSx receiver.
- Jim
I have done some preliminary testing of the new Garmin GPSMap 60CSx unit. It uses a new GPS technology from SiRF that promises greater sensitivity.
I have found it to be remarkably more sensitive. Side by side testing indoors where the GPSMap 60CS could only lock on 2 satellites. The GPSMap 60CSx locked on 6 satellites solidly. I expect it will practically never drop out under forest canopy. Further testing will be done but I have found it very impressive. It is currently available from GPSnow.com for $499.99 including free overnight delivery.
